LA MIRADA, Calif. – After trailing by 17 points late in the first period, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team rallied for a 10-point 81-71 victory over Biola Thursday night in La Mirada. The Broncos improve to a perfect 3-0 this season as the Eagles fall to 0-3.
CPP trailed 28-11 with 52 seconds left in the opening quarter, but turned it around and outscored Biola 33-12 the rest of the half to take a 44-40 lead at halftime, one they would not relinquish.
Ally Bates led all scorers with 21 points on 7 of 15 shooting, including five 3-pointers, one 3-pointer shy of matching her career-high.
Donja Payne enjoyed a double-double, dropping in 18 points and 10 rebounds and
Kalaya Buggs added 13 points.
Alicia Jones also recorded a double-double, but with 10 points and 12 assists.
As a team, the Broncos hit on 46.4 percent of their shots (32-69). They dominated the paint, outscoring the Eagles 46-14 underneath the basket. CPP also held a huge advantage on the boards, outrebounding Biola 49-28.
Biola, meanwhile, hit more shots from beyond the three-point line (15) than it did inside the arc (8), but it wouldn't be enough to hold off Cal Poly Pomona. Jordan Rabe led the Eagles with 17 points.
Cal Poly Pomona will host Concordia on Saturday at 2:00 pm in its 2022-23 home opener.
