Concordia Uses Big Second Half To Defeat Broncos

POMONA – Alicia Jones scored a team-high 16 points on 7 of 15 shooting, but Cal Poly Pomona suffered a 65-47 setback against Concordia in its home opener Saturday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona to wrap up non-conference play.

The Broncos snap their brief three-game win streak and fall to 3-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-2.

CPP led for much of the first half and went into the halftime break up two points at 25-23. However, it was a much different story in the second half as visiting CUI outscored the hosts 42-22 in the second half, including 16-5 in the fourth quarter to run away with the 18-point win.

Jones was the only Bronco in double figures as Donja Payne put in nine points as the team's second-leading scorer to go along with nine rebounds. Ally Bates added seven points with eight rebounds. As a team, CPP only connected on 30.9 percent from the floor on 17 of 55 shooting, including just 2 of 16 from long range.

Concordia was led by the 19 points and 11 rebounds of Teagan Thurman.

Cal Poly Pomona opens the CCAA schedule next Saturday when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino for a 1:00 pm matinee at Kellogg Arena.
