Johnson Scores 14 in Broncos Loss to the Pioneers, 68-58

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos freshman guard Bam Johnson scored 14 points and had three assists in the Broncos loss against the Cal State East Bay Pioneers, 68-58.
 
In the Broncos last match before the winter break, there were eight ties and seven lead changes against the Pioneers. CSUEB took the lead into the half, 25-20.
 
CPP scored 29 of their points from the bench while the Pioneers scored only four points from the bench. The Broncos dominated the paint as they scored 22 points against CSUEB's 18 points from the paint.
 
The Pioneers capitalized on their defensive effort scoring 25 points off turnovers as CPP scored 16 points from turnovers. The Broncos collected 10 offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points.
 
The final tie of the game was in the second half with 5:23 on the clock with the score at 48-48. The Pioneers went on a 10-0 run before the freshman forward Derrick Claxton hit his third three pointer of the game to break the run and send the score to 58-51.
 
The Broncos were unable to catch the lead CSUEB built and fell to the Pioneers, 68-58. CPP now stands with a record of 6-1 overall and 3-1 CCAA.
 
Leading the Broncos in points was Johnson who scored 14 points and had three assists and three rebounds. Sophomore guard Jaden Winfield and Claxton each scored 10 points. Winfield closed the game with six rebounds and Claxton went 3-5 (.600) from the three-point line.
 
The Broncos' next game is Sunday, January 1st as they take on Cal State San Bernardino with tipoff set for 3:00 pm at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino.
