31-0 Second Half Run Sets Broncos for Overtime Win Against Toros, 71-65

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos were down by 21 points in the second half against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros when CPP went on a 31-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the game. Freshman forward Derrick Claxton grabbed his first career double-double as he led the Broncos to the victory in overtime, 71-65.
 
The Toros were quick to take a substantial lead in the first half, outscoring CPP 35-16. CSUDH went 12-30 (40%) from the field and 5-15 (33.3%) from three-point range. The Broncos were unable to score from beyond the arc and shot only 17.86% (5-28) from the field in the first half.
 
A layup by the Toros put the Broncos down by 21 points in the second half with 17:51 on the clock. The Broncos then went on an astonishing 31-0 run kickstarted by a layup by sophomore forward Caleb Nelson at 17:35. CPP kept the run going until the Broncos had the lead 53-41 with 5:15 on the clock. The Toros climbed back to force overtime with the score, 58-58.
 
In overtime CPP went on a 13-0 run to down their third CCAA opponent in a row, 71-65. The Broncos rise to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in CCAA competition.
 
Leading the Broncos in points was Claxton who scored 20 points, and had 10 rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Christopher Mitchell collected 12 points of his own and had five rebounds. Rounding out the Broncos scoring double-digits was Chris Gayles Jr. who scored 11 points, and had three rebounds.
 
The Broncos' next game is Sunday, December 18th as they take on Cal State East Bay with tipoff set for 3:00 pm in Kellogg Arena.
