No. 5 Broncos Open Season With Win Against PLNU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 1-0 victory against Point Loma on Thursday. The Broncos were the first to hit the net and staved off the Sea Lions offense keeping them scoreless for the entire match.

In the 21st minute, forward Jerry Ramirez found forward Paul Roger Henschke for the initial goal of the game. CPP would head into the locker room with a 1-0 lead against the Sea Lions.

At this point in the game, both Point Loma and the Broncos were about even on the stat sheet. Both teams took three shots and had one shot on goal. Goalkeeper CJ Walker closed the first half with one save.

In the second half, the Broncos continued to put the pressure on the Point Loma goalkeeper, taking nine shots with three shots on goal. The defensive line in Pele Martinez, Cesar Ruvalcaba, and Jasper Winslow kept PLNU to only four shots on the half.

Cal Poly Pomona starts the 2022 season with their first shutout, topping the Sea Lions, 1-0. Henschke collected a total of five shots on the game, one shot on goal, and scored the sole goal of the game off an assist by Ramirez. Midfielder Mike Moser attempted three shots with one shot on goal.

"I am delighted with my team" said head coach Matt O'Sullivan. "It's a very tough Point Loma team that wins a lot of games each year. There is a reason for that. They are well coached and are going to be excellent going forward."

O'Sullivan continued, "We were outstanding on our own half, we did not give them a lot of chances and we have some things to fix in front of the goal. That's championship fútbol, you have to dig when you don't play great, and we did! I am very proud of our group!"

"Our defense was the key to our win today," said Henschke. "Everyone worked for each other. It was a great start, and we will keep working. I am proud of the guys, and I can't wait to work hard with this team to achieve more!"

The Broncos' next match is their home opener against Westminster at Kellogg Stadium with a kickoff time at 7:00 pm. Catch the game live on ccaanetwork.com.
