Early Penalty Kick Leads to Loss for the Broncos

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona faced Cal State LA in a preseason matchup. A penalty kick early in the game gave the Golden Eagles the lead and the win, 1-0.

It was in the 5th minute when CSULA was given a penalty that was shot and scored by midfielder Shelby Melin. This gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead that the Broncos could not catch. CPP now stands with an overall record of 0-2-0.

The Broncos took nine shots against CSULA's 11 shots on the game. The Golden Eagles put pressure on the Broncos goalkeepers Kat Aguayo who had three saves and Audrey Brown with two saves.

Forward Allyssa Larkin led the team with three shots and two shots on goal. Forward Tara Oper took two shots on the game. Defender Bella Anderson took her sole shot on target for a shot on goal.

"It's a slow start for our group" said coach Jay Mason. "Unfortunately, we went behind early. In the second half, I am really proud of our team's response. We generated some great chances. We hit the bar and forced a couple solid saves from their goalkeeper."

Coach Mason continued, "We are still learning and finding our feet. We're looking forward to a great week of training."

The Broncos continue preseason competition next week at Kellogg Stadium when they face Point Loma on Thursday, September 1st at 4:30 pm.

Bronco Bits: Cal Poly Pomona seventh-year head coach Jay Mason moved to 43-34-15 in his coaching career ... CPP still leads with 24-13-8 all-time against Cal State LA.
