Broncos Outpace the Toros in First CCAA Win

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos hosted the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros for the opening match of the CCAA conference. The Broncos set the pace and kept charging the Toros, winning the match by a close, 1-0.
 
In the 39th minute, the Broncos were awarded a freekick when midfielder Liberty Ortiz scored the goal off the kick. This was enough to take the lead and win against CSUDH, 1-0. CPP now stands with an overall record of 2-4-1, and 1-0-0 CCAA record.
 
At kickoff CPP was ready to face their first CCAA opponent as they collected 12 shots against CSUDH five shots on the game. The Broncos defense in Isabella Anderson, Lindsay Sung, and Sydney Contrestano kept the ball up field and off target for one Toros shot on goal that was saved by goalkeeper Audrey Brown.
 
Leading the Broncos is shots was Ortiz with three shots and one shot on goal. Forward Allyssa Larkin took two shots and had two shots on goal. Midfielder Marisa Salazar also had two shots on the game and had one shot one goal.
 
"Every game is tough in the CCAA and today was no different" said coach Jay Mason. "I'm proud of our group's perseverance against a very physical CSUDH team. Our young players gained some valuable experience today that will serve them well as the season moves forward."
 
CPP's next match is Sunday, September 23rd against Cal State Monterey Bay at Kellogg Stadium with kickoff set for 11:30 am.
Bronco Bits: Head coach Jay Mason moves to 45-37-16 in his seventh year (sixth season) at Cal Poly Pomona and 26-20-14 against CCAA opponents… The Broncos are now 179-138-50 in conference matches … CPP is 23-35-12 against CSUDH and has won the last two games against the Toros.
