POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos hosted Cal State Monterey Bay for the second match in their CCAA opening weekend. The Broncos took a significant lead in the first half and kept steady to earn their second CCAA victory, 3-1.
In the seventh minute midfielder
Jessica Llamas was first to score. Midfielder
Jordyn Scott hit her first goal of the season off the throw in by defender
Krista Eberle. Heading into the second half the Broncos were up, 2-0.
The Otters put themselves on the board with a goal in the 52
nd minute. For the second time this weekend, midfielder
Liberty Ortiz scored a goal off a freekick to take the score to 3-1. The Broncos closed the game, 3-1, to win their second CCAA match bringing their CCAA record to 2-0-0 and overall record to 3-4-1.
Ortiz led CPP in shots as she took two shots both of which were shots on goal. Defender
Giselle Samayoa also had two shots on the game with one shot on goal. Goalkeeper
Audrey Brown closed the game with three saves.
"I am really proud of the way we started today as a group," said coach
Jay Mason. "Great energy and commitment on both sides of the ball. Today was a great example of perseverance. They never quit and kept pushing in very challenging conditions."
Coach Mason continued, "I am looking forward to some much-needed recovery this week in preparation for a tough road trip."
CPP's next match is Friday, September 30
th against Chico State in Chico with kickoff set for 4:30 pm.
