Early Lead Carries Broncos to Win in CCAA Opener

ARCATA, Calif. – The Broncos seem to have found a winning formula in the past two games, that is applying pressure early to gain quick separation and then hanging on to that lead for the remainder of the game. After taking a 22-8 lead in the opening 10 minutes against CUI last week, the Broncos got out to an impressive 14-0 lead in the opening five minutes against the Lumberjacks on Thursday night.

CPP maintained a double digit lead through the entire first half, and with one minute to go, Chris Gayles Jr. hit a three to extend that lead to 20. Going into half, the Broncos were in full control with a 38-18 lead. The Broncos maintained a comfortable buffer in the second half, their lead never once dropping below 13 points. The game would conclude with a final score of 70-53, giving the Broncos their second win of the season and 1-0 in CCAA action.

Thursday night was a great team win, as seven different Broncos scored at least five points. The team's leading scorer on the season, Brandon Porter, also led the team with 13 points in the game. In the second half, Porter had back-to-back dunks within a span of 20 seconds, the second coming off a steal and a fastbreak in the final three minutes.

Jaden Winfield and Michael Ofoegbu were close behind with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jordan Carpenter scored a career-high nine points, while Gayles Jr. and Malcolm Bell had seven a piece.

In addition to spreading the scoring, the entire team contributed on the boards with nine different Broncos collecting at least one rebound. Caleb Nelson led the team with five, his third time doing so in the first five games this season. Despite the strong team effort, their 22 rebounds is their fewest in a game since March 3, 2022 when they fell to Cal State San Marcos in the CCAA Tournament.

The Broncos shot an impressive 52 percent from the field, compared to the Lumberjacks' 36 percent. Both teams shot 32 percent beyond the arc, while the Broncos outscored Humboldt 26-15 on points from turnovers – 19 of which came in the first half.
