Broncos Close Road Trip with Win Against Toros, 81-67

CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos had four athletes in double figures as they topped the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in Carson, 81-67.
 
This win takes the Broncos to an overall record of 10-8 and CCAA conference record of 7-8. The Toros record drops to 8-14 overall and 4-12 CCAA.
 
The Broncos shot 29 of 62 from the field and 10 of 25 from three-point range. CPP also dominated the boards, grabbing 37 rebounds against CSUDH's 27 rebounds on the game. The Broncos scored 29 bench points and controlled the lead for 88.9 percent of the game.
 
At the start of the second half CPP had a slight lead over CSUDH, 40-38. With the clock at 16:24 the Broncos went on a 10-2 run to take the score to 57-47. The Broncos defense forced the Toros to seven turnovers in the second half alone. CPP broke a three-game skid to take the win, 81-67.
 
Both sophomore forward Caleb Nelson and freshman guard Bam Johnson led the Broncos in points as they each scored 16 points. Nelson shot five of 11 from the field and went three of seven from beyond the arc. Johnson hit six of eight from the field and connected on two of two from three-point range.
 
Sophomore guard Chris Gayles Jr. scored 15 points and had six rebounds and one assist. Rounding off the Broncos in double-digits was freshman forward Derrick Claxton who scored 12 points, 10 of which were scored in the second half.
 
The Broncos' next game is Tuesday, February 7th as they take on the Cal State San Bernardino Yotes in Kellogg Arena, with tip-off set for 7:00 pm.
