POMONA – Tyler Chaffee delivered the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over sixth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in the first game of a four game series Saturday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos rise to 14-8 overall and 6-6 in the CCAA. The Yotes fall to 19-5 (10-4 CCAA).
CPP starter
Rhys Stevens went seven strong innings and allowed two runs on four hits, striking out five. He kept CSUSB off the board and with just three hits until the top of the eighth inning when the Yotes knotted the game a 2-2.
Prior to that, the Broncos had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on a
Johnny Pappas single up the middle scoring
Nin Burns II. Another CPP run came home in the third when
Trent MacKinney singled home
Luke Watson for the 2-0 lead.
It stayed that way until CSUSB loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, chasing Stevens from the game. On came
Matt Orozco who gave up a two-run double to Giovanni Del Negro, but settled down and induced two line outs and struck out Jason Shedlock to escape the inning.
Eric Romo came on in the ninth to retire the Yotes in order before the Broncos came up in the bottom of the ninth.
Cedrick Perez opened the inning with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pappas. The next batter, Chaffee, hit the ball up the middle allowing Perez to score the game-winning run.
Brent Cota went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Broncos and Pappas went 2 for 3, accounting for 5 of the 10 CPP hits in the contest.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino return to Scolinos Field Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
