Nelson Extends Double Figure Streak in Win Over Lumberjacks

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball teams secured a victory against the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks on Saturday night, winning by a final score of 52-46. With the win, the Broncos rank third in the CCAA standings with an 11-6 record, while improving their overall record to 15-7.

Their win on Saturday also ensured that CPP would finish the 2023-24 season with a winning record, marking the 42nd time in the program's 49-season history that the Broncos will own a winning percentage above .500.

The Broncos maintained a consistent lead over the Lumberjacks in the first quarter, holding a 15-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play. The second quarter followed a similar pattern, characterized by low-scoring exchanges, with the Broncos narrowly outscoring the Lumberjacks 11-10. A late three-pointer by Breanne Ha with 22 seconds left in the quarter propelled the Broncos into halftime with a 26-19 lead.

Although the Broncos began the third quarter with a quick trey from Sydney Fedinec, their scoring momentum stalled out as they were held to just eight points, allowing the Lumberjacks to narrow the lead with their 17 points in the quarter.

However, the fourth quarter saw the Broncos rally back with their highest-scoring quarter of the game, notching 18 points to the Lumberjacks' 10. Back-to-back makes by Mydrea Moore would give the Broncos the lead with 2:36 on the clock, one they would hang on to for the final few minutes of the game.

Sydney Nelson once again led the team in scoring with 21 points, accompanied by seven rebounds and three assists. This was the freshman's 12th straight game scoring in double figures. Mydrea Moore also made significant contributions, finishing as the second-highest scorer with eight points, along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Moore and Reina Saucedo led the Broncos with eight boards each, as the Broncos out rebounded the Lumberjacks 48 to 31 in the game.

Kalaya Buggs and Breanne Ha added six points each to the scoresheet, with Buggs contributing seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals, while Ha added two rebounds and a steal.

Ultimately, the Broncos came out on top with a 52-46 win, bringing their CCAA record to 11-6 while also improving their overall record to 15-7.
