POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona's unbeaten streak, which lasted 348 days, came to an end Friday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Chico State in a tightly contested CCAA matchup. The Broncos now sit at 9-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play after suffering their first defeat of the season.
The lone goal of the match came just four minutes in, when Chico State capitalized on an early opportunity to take the lead. Despite the quick setback, the Broncos maintained composure and controlled much of the game from that point forward, dictating tempo and generating a steady flow of chances.
Cal Poly Pomona outshot Chico 14-4 and dominated the second half with a 10-3 shot advantage. The Broncos also earned nine corner kicks compared to just one for the Wildcats. Several quality opportunities tested Chico's goalkeeper, with shots on goal from
Morgan Huff,
Angelina Rivas,
Vanessa Cruz, and
Liberty Ortiz forcing key saves. Huff led a strong second-half push, but CPP couldn't find the finishing touch needed to draw level.
On the defensive end, Cal Poly Pomona held Chico to just four total shots, all on target. Goalkeeper
Jenna Tetrault made three saves to keep the Broncos in striking distance throughout the match. The back line did well to shut down further scoring chances after the early goal, keeping the game within reach.
The match was physical, with 14 combined fouls and yellow cards issued to both sides. Still, CPP maintained focus and discipline while applying consistent pressure.
