Perfect in Conference, Broncos Take First Place With Ninth Straight Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal Poly Pomona volleyball picked up a pivotal win over Cal State LA on Friday night, racking up their ninth straight victory to claim sole possession of first place in the CCAA standings. The two teams had been the last remaining unbeaten teams in conference play entering Friday, before CPP powered past CSULA in four sets (25-16, 25-12, 24-26, 25-20).

With the win, the Broncos improve to 11-4 overall while remaining a perfect 9-0 in CCAA matches, while the Golden Eagles fall to 12-4 overall (8-1 CCAA). Conference play is now officially at the halfway point, as there are nine more matches remaining in the regular season.

The Broncos swung well against the Golden Eagles in the CCAA Game of the Week, hitting at a .333 clip – marking their third-highest of the season. As expected, junior opposite hitter Sarah Ybarra led the attack with a match-high 21 kills on an efficient .359 hitting clip while adding 13 digs and five block assists for a dominant 24.5-point outing. Middle blocker Alexia Athans was equally impactful at the net, swinging .417 with seven kills and a match-best eight blocks.

Freshman setter Kacie Caoili dished out 49 assists, also chipping in five digs and three blocks. Junior middle blocker Anastacia Garza contributed season-highs with nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage and added five blocks, while Charlotte Koerber and Elle Walker combined for 23 kills and 25 total points. Koerber led the team with 19 digs on defense, while Renee Nachtigall (10) and Kaden Young (9) each helped keep rallies alive. Young is now just seven digs away from 1,000 in her collegiate career.

After dominating the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-12, Cal Poly Pomona weathered a late Golden Eagles push in the third, 24-26, before sealing the match with a composed fourth set. With the Broncos up 23-20, Garza closed out the win with back-to-back emphatic kills, securing CPP's place atop the CCAA standings.
