Volleyball Remains Perfect in Conference With Five Set Win Over Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team won a five-set marathon against the Coyotes on Thursday night by set scores of 30-28, 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, and 15-10. With the win, the Broncos remain perfect in conference with a 5-0 CCAA record, while also improving to 7-4 overall on the season.

Freshman Kacie Caoili had a match to remember, logging a career-high 58 assists, the second-most in school history under the current 25-point scoring format (since 2008). The only other setter to record more assists in a match was Kira Zimmerman with 65 against Azusa Pacific in the 2018 NCAA West Regionals.

The Broncos opened the night with an intense first set that went into extras. With the score tied 28-28, Cal Poly Pomona strung together consecutive points on kills from Elle Walker and Alexia Athans to close out the opener 30-28. The second frame was equally contested, and it was junior Sarah Ybarra who led the charge with timely swings, finishing with seven kills in the set. Those seven included the final four consecutive points for the Broncos in the 25-23 win.

San Bernardino, however, responded with its blocking presence in the third. Despite solid playmaking from Caoili, the Coyotes edged out the set 25-22 to stay alive. The fourth also belonged to the hosts, as CSUSB's net defense held the Broncos to just .133 hitting, forcing a decisive fifth set.

Cal Poly Pomona refused to go quietly. Behind Charlotte Koerber's swings, tallying 16 kills, and Walker's consistent presence with 17 kills, the Broncos surged ahead early in the final set. Koerber finished the night with a career-high 24 digs, which, when added with her freshman statistics from Daemen University, officially put her in the 600 kill / 600 dig club.

Ybarra, who finished with a team-high 22 kills and 15 digs for a double-double, kept the offense rolling with three consecutive kills to make the score 10-7. Koerber and Ybarra teamed up for the final five points of the match, sealing the decisive fifth set and the Broncos' seventh victory of the season.

The last time the Broncos defeated CSUSB on their home court was 11 years ago to the day, also coming via a 3-2 win on October 2, 2014. Their last win in San Bernardino before that match occurred in 2005, as the Coyotes are notoriously hard to defeat at home. From 2015-2023, the Coyotes won 77 consecutive regular season matches on their home court.
