Broncos Fall as Cougars Convert Key Second-Half Opportunity

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer fell 1-0 to Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon in a tightly contested CCAA matchup on the road. The Broncos created several chances throughout the match but were unable to convert as the Cougars took advantage of one key opportunity in the second half.

Cal Poly Pomona generated early momentum with shots from Marvin Gamez, Mads Frederiksen, and Clement Badger, all saved by the San Marcos goalkeeper. Devin Jenkins and Sam Lena also tested the defense with on-target efforts, but the first half ended scoreless despite the Broncos holding much of the possession and pressing high.

In the second half, Lena nearly broke the deadlock less than a minute after the restart with a shot to the bottom left corner, but it was turned aside. Cal State San Marcos found the breakthrough in the 64th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Broncos pushed hard to respond, with late chances from Liam McFarlane, Daniel Gutierrez, and Hector Arellanes, but could not find the equalizer.

Goalkeeper Jack Chapman turned in a solid performance with five saves, keeping the Broncos within striking distance throughout the match. Cal Poly Pomona finished with nine total shots, five of them on goal, while also earning two corner kicks.

With the loss, Cal Poly Pomona moves to 7-4-5 overall and 2-3-3 in CCAA play.
