POMONA, Calif. - In a closely contested match at Kellogg Field, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team was edged out 0-1 by Cal State LA, concluding their regular season home slate in the CCAA. With the loss, the Broncos now stand 7-5-5 overall and 2-4-3 in conference play, with one final CCAA road game remaining.
The match also served as a celebration of the Broncos' senior class. Cal Poly Pomona honored Joseph Spencer, Marcus Jorgensen, Jakob Singh, Sam Lena, and Mads Frederiksen, recognizing their leadership and contributions to the program over their careers. The ceremony highlighted the impact these players have had on and off the field, leaving a lasting legacy for the team.
The first half saw the Broncos control much of the play and create multiple scoring opportunities. Jakob Singh nearly broke the deadlock early, striking the top of the woodwork, while Daniel Gutierrez, Marvin Gamez, and Hector Arellanes all had shots that were expertly saved by LA goalkeeper. Cal Poly Pomona outshot the Golden Eagles 7-4 in the first half and earned two corner kicks compared to LA's one, but were unable to convert any chances into a goal.
In the second half, the Broncos continued to apply pressure. CPP tallied multiple corner kicks and had several shots on target from Gamez, Gutierrez, and Marcus Jorgensen. Despite dominating possession and generating opportunities, the Golden Eagles' defense remained resilient. The match was ultimately decided in the 86th minute, when LA converted a penalty kick to take the lead. Cal Poly Pomona pushed hard in the final minutes but could not find an equalizer before the final whistle.
Statistically, the Broncos outshot LA 14-8 overall, with five shots on goal to four, and earned eight corner kicks to two. Marvin Gamez led the team with four shots, two on goal, while defenders Marcus Jorgensen and Joseph Spencer played the full 90 minutes, anchoring a disciplined backline throughout the game.
