Cal Poly Pomona Punches Postseason Ticket with Home Win

POMONA, Calif. - A postseason berth is officially secured for Cal Poly Pomona after a 2-1 home win over Cal State San Marcos on Friday night. With the result, the Broncos improved to 13-1-2 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play, continuing their impressive run in front of the home fans at Kellogg Stadium.

The Broncos got off to a fast start when Angelina Rivas put them ahead in the fourth minute. After a quick sequence through midfield, Braedyn Kincade played a pass into Vanessa Cruz, who set up Rivas for a clean finish inside the box. The early goal gave Cal Poly Pomona control of the match, and the Broncos outshot San Marcos 9-1 in the first half while generating several corner kicks and keeping pressure on the Cougar defense.

San Marcos found an equalizer midway through the second half when they scored in the 74th minute to tie the match at 1-1. The goal gave the visitors a brief spark, but Cal Poly Pomona responded almost immediately. Just four minutes later, Cruz stepped up to the spot after a foul in the box and calmly buried her fifth penalty kick goal of the season to restore the Broncos' lead as her composure once again proved crucial in a tight match.

The Broncos' defense, led by goalkeeper Jenna Tetrault, stayed solid through the closing minutes. Tetrault finished with two saves, including a key stop in the final moments to secure the win. Liberty Ortiz and Mikaela Marr helped anchor the back line as the team held off several late attacks from San Marcos.

Cal Poly Pomona finished with 13 shots, four on target, while San Marcos recorded 10 shots and three on goal. The Broncos also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the victory, Cal Poly Pomona officially clinches a berth in the CCAA Tournament and will look to close out the regular season strong as they prepare for postseason play.
