No. 15 Broncos Win Seventh Straight in First-Ever Meeting With UC Merced

MERCED, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball earned a 53-40 road victory over UC Merced on Friday evening at Greg and Cathie Hostetler Court, marking the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Broncos improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while also winning their seventh straight contest since November 22nd.

After a slow offensive start, Cal Poly Pomona settled in defensively and used control of the paint and the glass to turn the game in its favor. The Broncos held UC Merced to just 40 points on 32.7 percent shooting, while forcing key turnovers that led to extended possessions and a 15-2 scoring difference in second-chance opportunities.

Junior Sydney Nelson led the Green & Gold with a game-high 14 points, scoring efficiently around the rim while adding five rebounds and steady defensive pressure. Andrea Stajic contributed 10 points and four rebounds, knocking down timely shots that helped create separation in the second half. Mydrea Moore was impactful on both ends, finishing with eight rebounds and anchoring the interior defense, while Brielle Minor, Jeanette Fine, and Hunter Hudson each added six points to the scoresheet.

After a surprisingly low-scoring first half that saw the Broncos ahead 22-21 at the break, Cal Poly Pomona outscored UC Merced 17-9 in the third quarter to seize momentum. That run carried into the fourth quarter, where the Broncos stretched the lead to as many as 18 points behind strong rebounding and efficient scoring down low.

Despite average shooting from the floor (36.2 percent), beyond the arc (33.3 percent), and from the line (57.1 percent), the Broncos dominated inside the paint, outscoring the Bobcats 32-18 and outrebounding UCM 43-20 – ultimately proving to be the difference in the victory.
