21-Point Run Leads Broncos to CCAA Opener Win Over LA

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball opened up conference play with a 68-49 victory over Cal State LA in the CCAA Game of the Week on Thursday night, improving to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in CCAA play. The Broncos controlled the game from the opening tip, using a 21-14 first quarter and a commanding 18-8 second-quarter surge to build a 39-22 halftime advantage.

Junior Sydney Nelson powered the Broncos with a game-high 18 points, shooting 9-for-21 while adding eight rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Nelson is averaging a blistering 19.3 points in four games played this season, a mark that would rank Top 25 in the nation once she meets the minimum games played threshold (play in 75 percent of team's games).

CPP's balanced offense continued with Andrea Stajic, who posted 13 points, seven rebounds, and a strong defensive presence. Brielle Minor added 10 points and five rebounds, while Kadence Lloyd provided a key spark off the bench with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting and five boards of her own.

Defensively, the Broncos were exceptional. CPP held the Golden Eagles to 23 percent shooting from the field and just 12 points in the paint. The Broncos forced nine turnovers and controlled the glass with a 50-39 rebounding advantage, limiting second-chance opportunities and maintaining momentum throughout the game.

A decisive 21-0 run spanning late in the second quarter into the early third effectively put the game out of reach, pushing the Broncos' lead to as many as 22 points. CPP's depth also shined, as the bench contributed 17 points, including timely baskets from freshman Madison Eade during key stretches.

Cal Poly Pomona closed the night shooting 45.3 percent from the field, their second-best mark of the season, capitalizing on efficient ball movement and disciplined shot selection. With the victory, CPP extends its win streak to four while building momentum into the rest of conference play.
