Volleyball Sweeps Chico State in CCAA Opener

CHICO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona volleyball started off conference play with an emphatic win, sweeping Chico State in three sets to improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in CCAA play. The Broncos won all three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-16 in Acker Gym on Thursday night.

The reigning CCAA champion Broncos were efficient offensively, hitting .320 as a team, while limiting the Wildcats to a .189 attack percentage. Junior Sarah Ybarra paced the attack with a match-high 13 kills on a .300 hitting percentage. Charlotte Koerber and Elle Walker each added 10 kills, while the former lead all players with five aces – her most in a match as a Bronco.

Freshman setter Kacie Caoili directed the offense, dishing out 31 assists as CPP tallied 46 total kills on the night. The San Jose native has now recorded at least 30 assists in each of her first five collegiate matches.

Defensively, the Broncos controlled the net and backcourt. CPP recorded eight blocks compared to just four for the Wildcats, while Kaden Young anchored the back row with 13 digs. The service game was another difference-maker, as the Broncos notched 11 aces in the sweep, including two apiece from Ybarra and Caoili.

After battling back for four of the last five points from Chico State in the opening set, the Broncos found another gear in sets two and three. The Green & Gold's serve pressure and clean attacking widened the gap as the Broncos closed out the match with confidence, winning the final two frames by a convincing eight and nine-point margin, respectively.
