POMONA, Calif. - In a thrilling and hard-fought battle at Kellogg Stadium, Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer pulled off a signature win on Saturday night, defeating No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino, 3-2. The result marked the Yotes' first loss of the 2025 season and gave the Broncos a momentum boost heading into conference play. Despite recording their lowest shot total of the season with just seven attempts, the Broncos were remarkably efficient, scoring three goals on only five shots on target.
The scoring began in the 17th minute when Marvin Gamez broke through the Yotes' back line and found the net off an assist from Sam Lena, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead. CSUSB responded in the 30th minute, leveling the match at 1-1. Just before halftime, Cal Poly Pomona regained the lead after Daniel Hernandez calmly converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute, giving the Broncos a 2-1 edge at the break.
The second half saw increased pressure from Cal State San Bernardino, who fired 11 shots and earned seven corner kicks in the final 45 minutes alone. Their efforts paid off in the 70th minute when a chaotic sequence in the box resulted in a goal, tying the match at 2-2. However, the Broncos showed poise and resilience. In the 85th minute, Emiliano Garcia delivered the game-winning goal with a composed finish off a setup by Gamez, who tallied both a goal and an assist on the night.
Goalkeeper Jack Chapman played a key role in the win, recording five saves, including several crucial stops late in the match as the Yotes pushed for an equalizer. Cal Poly Pomona's defense held strong under sustained pressure, particularly in the closing minutes, and prevented CSUSB from completing the comeback.
The Broncos will now turn their focus to CCAA conference play, but they'll see Cal State San Bernardino again on November 6 in what is sure to be a highly anticipated rematch.
