SAN DIEGO – The No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team fell to No. 20 Point Loma, 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-19), Thursday night at Golden Gymnasium. The loss marked Point Loma's first victory over the Broncos since 1992.
Sarah Ybarra led Cal Poly Pomona with 13 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double in the past five matches. Ybarra's 996 career kills passes Vanessa Williams (2005-08) for the 10
th-most in program history. With just four more, the La Habra native will become the 10
th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 kill-mark.
Senior
Charlotte Koerber added nine kills and 12 digs, while
Alexia Athans recorded seven kills on a team-best .313 hitting percentage.
Alexia Zammit and
Paige Bowyer teamed up for 30 of the team's 36 assists, and
Renee Nachtigall contributed 20 digs.
Point Loma took control early in the opening set, building an 11-4 advantage behind a balanced attack and a pair of kills from Kyra Miles. The Broncos responded with a 6-1 run, highlighted by consecutive kills from Athans and a block assist from Ybarra and Athans, to cut the deficit to 16-12. Point Loma answered with four of the next five points and eventually claimed the set, 25-18.
The second set featured seven lead changes and 13 ties. After Point Loma opened a 7-3 lead, CPP rallied behind strong serving from
Rachel Mau and Ybarra, including back-to-back aces from Ybarra, to take a 15-12 advantage. The Broncos maintained an 18-15 lead before Point Loma scored four consecutive points to move in front, 19-18. CPP later led at 23-21, but the Sea Lions closed the set on a 5-1 run to win, 26-24.
CPP stayed within striking distance throughout the third set, with Broncos ahead at 13-12. Point Loma then scored five straight points, including back-to-back aces, to take a 17-13 lead. The Broncos cut the margin to 24-19 with kills from Koerber and
Elle Walker, but Point Loma closed out the match on the next rally.
