Baseball Wins Fifth Straight, Undefeated in CCAA Play

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team continued its strong start to CCAA play Friday night, defeating Chico State 6-1 at Scolinos Field to remain unbeaten in conference action. The Broncos improved to 13-6 overall and 5-0 in the CCAA behind a balanced performance that featured timely hitting, solid pitching, and clean defense.

After four scoreless innings, Chico State (13-10, 2-3 CCAA) broke through in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Cal Poly Pomona responded immediately in the bottom half when Jack Sanders launched a solo home run to left field, his seventh of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Sanders, now in his third season with the Broncos, sits eighth all-time in career home runs with 22.

The Broncos seized control in the fifth inning with a four-run rally. Bryan Richman started the frame with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Diego Murillo followed with a base hit to put two runners aboard before Daniel Ruiz delivered the big swing of the inning, ripping a double down the left-field line to drive in two runs and give the Green & Gold a 3-1 lead. After an intentional walk to Sanders, Austin Duarte added an RBI single up the middle to score Ruiz. Later in the inning, Julian Angulo lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Sanders and extended the Bronco lead to 5-1.

Cal Poly Pomona added an insurance run in the seventh when Richman lined an RBI single to right field, scoring Tyler Blade after the Broncos worked a pair of walks. Richman finished the night with a game-high three hits, being one of four Broncos to finish with multiple hits in the game.

On the mound, Andrew Campbell earned his CCAA-leading fifth win of the season to improve to 5-1, holding Chico State to one run while scattering six hits across five innings and striking out five. The Bronco bullpen took care of the rest, as Geo Hernandez and Rex Jarcy combined for four scoreless innings to close out the win in the CCAA Game of the Week.
