Koerber and Walker Lead Broncos to Sweep in CCAA Opener

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona volleyball opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a straight-set victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night, defeating the Otters 25-23, 25-23, and 25-20 at Kellogg Arena.
 
Prior to the match, the teams and crowd observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the lives lost during the September 11 attacks on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
 
The No. 17 ranked Broncos improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play behind a balanced attack led by Charlotte Koerber and Elle Walker, who recorded 12 kills apiece. Koerber hit .346 and added six digs, while Walker finished at a .304 clip. Sarah Ybarra contributed nine kills, four digs and two blocks, and Alexia Athans added five kills on .364 hitting. Entering the match, Athans ranked No. 1 in all of Division II in hitting percentage at .518 on the season. 
 
Alexia Zammit directed the offense with 31 assists and collected a season-high nine digs. Renee Nachtigall also contributed with nine digs and four service aces, while Keira Limbrick added five.
 
After falling behind 18-14 in the opening set, CPP mounted a comeback with a 7-1 run. Zammit had an ace and the Otters had back-to-back errors that put the Broncos ahead. The Otters drew even at 22, but CPP claimed three of the final four points to secure the set.
 
The Broncos created separation midway through the second frame with a 5-0 run that turned a 10-10 tie into a 15-10 advantage. CSUMB later fought off five consecutive set points to pull within 24-23 before Ybarra closed the set with a kill.
 
CPP carried the momentum into the third, racing to a 7-1 lead behind Nachtigall's serving. The Broncos extended their advantage to 15-6 and held off a late Otter push, with Walker supplying the match-clinching kill.
 
Cal Poly Pomona finished with 40 kills, 10 aces, 38 digs and seven blocks.
 
 
Up Next
The Broncos will face Menlo for the first time in program history tomorrow, with the match taking place at 2:00 PM in Kellogg Arena.
