Cal Poly Pomona Athletics

SAN FRANCISCO – No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona volleyball remained perfect in conference play Friday night, sweeping San Francisco State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20), at San Francisco Federal Credit Union Gym. With the victory, the Broncos improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in CCAA competition.
 
San Francisco State controlled much of the opening set early, but CPP responded with a 6-1 run midway through the frame. Two blocks involving Alexia Zammit helped the Broncos move in front, while consecutive service aces from Zammit extended the lead to 19-13.
 
The Gators answered with a 5-0 run of their own, trimming the deficit to 19-18. Cal Poly Pomona settled in during the closing points, however, receiving kills from Charlotte Koerber and Knight before Alexia Athans finished the set with a kill, giving the Broncos a 25-23 victory.
 
Ybarra led the CPP attack with 15 kills, while Elle Walker added nine kills, and both Knight and Athans contributed seven kills. Knight was especially efficient offensively, recording seven kills on 10 attacks with a .600 hitting percentage. As a team, the Broncos hit .208 for the match and finished with 44 kills.
 
The second set featured several momentum swings. San Francisco State opened with a 5-1 advantage, but Ybarra sparked the Broncos' response with a service ace and a kill. After the Gators regained a 12-10 lead, Cal Poly Pomona scored seven of the next 12 points to pull ahead, 17-15.
 
The Broncos later used a 4-0 run to gain a 23-19 advantage. Knight delivered a kill during the stretch, and Ybarra helped CPP maintain control with strong play on both sides of the net. San Francisco State could not close the gap as the Broncos finished the set on top, 25-21.
 
The Gators again held an early lead in the third set, taking a 13-10 advantage after a pair of Cal Poly Pomona attack errors. The Broncos responded with one of their best stretches of the night, scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 19-16 lead.
 
Athans played a key role during the run with two kills, while Ybarra and Zammit added kills of their own. Cal Poly Pomona continued to apply pressure late in the set, building a 24-19 lead before Ybarra closed out the sweep with her 15th kill of the match.
 
Zammit directed the offense with 33 assists and added two service aces. Ybarra finished with 14 digs for her second double-double of the season, while Renee Nachtigall also recorded 14 digs from the libero position. The Broncos totaled 49 digs, six aces, and five team blocks, and held San Francisco State to a .206 hitting percentage.

The Broncos will continue CCAA play Saturday, September 19, at 2 p.m. against Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward, Calif. The Broncos are 25-6 all-time against the Pioneers, including an active 17-match winning streak dating back to 2013.
