HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona volleyball extended its winning streak to seven matches Saturday afternoon, earning a 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Gymnasium.
The No. 15 ranked Broncos improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while the Pioneers dropped to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Sarah Ybarra recorded a season-high 25 kills, hitting .250 while adding 16 digs, and a block.
Elle Walker contributed 14 kills, three digs, and two blocks, while
Alexia Athans added 10 kills on .391 hitting.
Charlotte Koerber also finished with 10 kills, and
Addi Knight recorded five kills and three block assists.
Setter
Alexia Zammit directed the Cal Poly Pomona offense with a season-high 48 assists and added 19 digs, an ace, and three block assists.
Renee Nachtigall anchored the back row with a team-best 20 digs.
The Broncos overcame an early deficit in the opening set. After the Pioneers pulled even at 14-14, Cal Poly Pomona responded with a 9-3 run, highlighted by kills from Ybarra, Walker, and Knight, to take control and eventually claim the set, 25-20.
East Bay established momentum in the second set with an 8-1 start and later built a 12-3 advantage. Cal Poly Pomona battled back behind a pair of Ybarra kills and a Knight kill, trimming the deficit to 17-14, but the Pioneers held on to even the match.
The Broncos answered emphatically in the third set, opening with a 3-0 lead and stretching the advantage to 10-4. Cal Poly Pomona maintained its pressure throughout the set, using strong attacking from Walker, Ybarra, and Athans to secure a 25-18 win.
The fourth set featured nine ties, including a 20-20 deadlock. Ybarra delivered a kill to put the Broncos ahead, and Cal Poly Pomona eventually reached match point at 24-23. After East Bay tied the set, Athans and Walker closed out the match with consecutive kills, giving the Broncos the 26-24 victory.
