POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team has done it again! The Broncos secured a 3-1 victory on Friday against the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay.
CPP remains undefeated thus far in the 2014 season, registering an impressive 10-0-1 overall record. With the victory, the Broncos took sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with their 5-0 tally.
After Friday's result, East Bay now owns a 3-5-3 overall record and has posted a 0-3-2 in conference play.
Friday started off with the Cal Poly Pomona Athletic Department hosting a BBQ at Kellogg Field to thank those people who help to make everything the department does, a reality. CPP head coach
Yossi Raz said: "We felt like today was another special day in our journey as we had the pleasure of hosting a BBQ for people who are dear to the athletic department."
Also on the agenda was "Think Pink," an annual event that encourages fans, players, coaches, and staff to help support breast cancer awareness.
"Today's game represented a great cause," said Raz. "Having events such as these help us to understand that sports are such a small part of both our lives, and the bigger picture. We are very fortunate to be able to help out in our own way in the fight against breast cancer."
Two more members of the Broncos' squad made their mark on the stat book Friday as they boosted the CPP season-to-date goal tally.
Luis Najera Jr. opened up the game for the Broncos as his goal halfway through the first half meant CPP was first on the board. He was assisted by
Christian Gonzalez Diaz and
Daniel Garcia Jr. The goal was Najera Jr.'s first goal of the 2014 season.
Ten minutes later, the Pioneers answered back as a throw-in found the feet of some East Bay players and Michael Tieku sent one by the CPP defense to tie up the game at one apiece.
Later in the game in the 37th minute, Ochoa found himself on the advantageous side of a free kick and sent it in from 20 yards. That marked his first goal since arriving at CPP.
The Broncos entered halftime with a 2-1 lead over CSUEB. Both teams carried six shots in the half.
To seal the Pioneers' fate in the second half, Ochoa would step up yet again. Just two minutes after he subbed back in, Gonzalez Diaz and
Alexander Turkson found an open Ochoa who fired one by the Pioneers' keeper to give the Broncos' their third and final goal of the day.
"To compete at home in front of our crowd and get another CCAA victory is a wonderful feeling," Raz said. "We were very happy with the result."
On Sunday CPP will host the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors at 11:30 a.m., for the first soccer game of the day. Women's soccer is set to follow at 2 p.m.
