POMONA
– Give Miguel Abascal an opportunity to have two shots on goal via penalty kick or free kick and chances are strong he will convert.

And that's what paved the way for Cal Poly Pomona's first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in 2009.

With his team leading 1-0, Abascal got the job done on both ends and the Broncos earned a 3-0 victory over visiting Humboldt State on Sunday before 140 fans in attendance at Kellogg Field.

The Broncos snapped their four-game losing streak and earned their first shutout of the year. CPP improved to 3-4-0 and 1-3 as it now prepares for UC San Diego on Friday night at Kellogg. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Broncos showed no ill effects off Friday's 3-1 loss to Sonoma State. Senior Dustin Suppe gave CPP a 1-0 lead when he camped out in front of the net and placed a header to score on a feed from Abascal in the game's 14th minute. It was Suppe's third goal of the season.

The Broncos took their 1-0 lead into halftime and made certain their lead would hold.

In the 58th minute, Abascal scored on a penalty kick and added his second goal on a free kick at 83:13. He leads the Broncos in goals with four and in points with 10.

The Broncos fired 15 total shots with 13 SOG in the victory.

Junior Tyler Reinhart had five shots with four SOG, while Suppe had all four of his shots on goal.

Freshman Chris Otani earned his first start of his career and had one save. Senior Thomas Ryan came on to play the entire second half and had four saves to his credit.

HSU had seven shots on the day with five SOG.

The game marked Abascal's second career two-goal day. He had a pair of goals in last year's 4-0 win at Cal State Stanislaus.
