POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona fired eight shots on goal in Friday night's game with visiting San Diego, but Tritons' goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong kept the Broncos off the scoreboard and UCSD's Gabi Hernandez' goal was all it needed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game.
Cal Poly Pomona lost its second straight home game and is 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA as it prepares to face Cal State East Bay on Sunday . Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
UCSD improved to 6-2, 4-2.
The Broncos featured 11 shots in the first period and six SOG, but couldn't get through against Armstrong.
Senior Bethany Meichsner had two SOG in the early going and sophomore Justine Barclay and senior Cody McClure each had one, before UCSD got its goal in the 31st minute.
Hernandez worked into position in front of the net and received the ball from teammate Alexa Enlow. Hernandez then punched the ball up front on a rebound and got it past Broncos' goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez.
That would take care of the scoring as UCSD made the goal stand.
Freshman Angela Garcia had the others SOG – both occurring inside the final five minutes of the half.
The Tritons were dominant offensively in the second half as they out-shot CPP 8-2 and had three SOG.
CPP had only two shots in the final 45 minutes – both SOG from senior Andrea Salerno and sophomore Valerie Strawn.
UCSD held the advantage in corner kicks (10-5) and each team had one offsides.
