Griffin earns NCAA 200-meter provisional time

-- Junior Carter Griffin picked up a personal-best time in the 200 meters and met an NCAA provisional standard to highlight the Cal Poly Pomona track and field teams at Saturday's Tiny Lister Invitational, held at Cal State Los Angeles.

Carter placed sixth in the 200 meters in 21.43 to join teammate Jonathan Williams as the two Broncos who have the provisional time in the 200. Williams placed fourth in the race at 21.35 and owns a season-best 21.30.

Griffin went on to finish second in the 400 in 48.24. He already has met the provisional standard with his 47.54 at last week's meet at Azusa Pacific.

Junior Jose Marquez finished fifth in the 1500 (4:01.47) and senior Andrew Miller placed sixth in the pole vault (15-1). 

Decathlete Michael Hernandez participated in the triple jump for the first time this season and placed second with a leap of 45-7 1/4.

Freshman Shane Cioniwas fifth in the discus (137-3).

For the women, senior Amber Hebbplaced third in the 1,500 (4:48.48), while sophomore Tramieka Thomas and teammate Alexandra Pankey tied for second in the long jump (17-6 1/4). Thomas went on to finish fifth in the triple jump (35-6 3/4).

Senior Riz Carringtonwas fifth in the shot put at 37-9 1/4 and fifth in the discus (125-11).

Junior Ileana Tejadawas just one inch shy of hitting the provisional standard in the hammer throw. She placed fourth at 162-4.

The 3,000 meters was held for both the men and women. The event is not recognized as an NCAA qualifying event. Marquez finished second (8:54.08) and sophomore Clark Selters fifth (9:23.98) for the men.

The women's 3,000 featured Broncos' Victoria Bateman (5th, 11:25.85) and Sarah Garcia (6th, 11:31.49).

The teams will compete at Saturday's Steve Scott Invite, hosted by UC Irvine.
