POMONA, Calif. - Highlighted by the women's cross country team advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Kentucky this past fall and four members of the track and field squads competing at the D-II National Championships in Turlock last month, the 2010-11 school year has given head coach Troy Johnson plenty to smile about.
The cross country and track and field teams celebrated their athletic and academic success on Tuesday with the annual awards banquet at Kellogg West.
Johnson and his coaching staff handed out five awards through the evening, including the Most Outstanding Athletes of the Year for cross country.
Ryan Carrell won on the men's side, while
Tiffany Dinh took home the top honor for the women.
Carrell finished as the Broncos' top runner in the fall, leading CPP to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division II West Regional, with the team narrowly missing a spot at nationals. He Posted top 8,000-meter time of 24:58.0 to place fifth at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in Whittier, Calif.
Dinh improved dramatically from her freshman campaign and led the Broncos' women's cross country squad to its first appearance at the NCAA D-II National Championships in 25 years. At the national race in Louisville, Ky., she placed 72nd with a time of 23:03.0. Dinh finished second overall at the CCAA Championships in Whittier, Calif., earning a spot on the All-CCAA First Team.
For the track and field awards,
Jacob Deavers was selected the Most Outstanding Athlete for the men's squad while
Tramieka Thomas earned the honor on the women's side.
Deavers battled cold and rainy conditions Saturday night, finishing seventh in the 400-meter hurdles final at the NCAA D-II National Championships to receive All-American recognition. The junior from Lake Elsinore, Calif., posted a mark of 54.81.
After stellar performances in the last few weeks of the regular season, Thomas earned the chance to compete in two championship events. She joined her teammate
Heather Corder in the 100-meter hurdles, where she ran a time of 14.72. Thomas recorded her qualifying mark in the long jump on May 6 at the CCAA Championships in Turlock, going 19-2.75.
The fifth and final honor was the Coaches' Award for leadership, which was given to senior thrower
Ileana Tejada. Active with the Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) and many other organizations on campus, Tejada contributed an immense amount to the track and field program. She captured a CCAA title in the hammer throw at the 2010 conference championships.
On the academic side in late February, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named
Scott McMichael and
Matthew Prentice from the men's cross country team and Dinh and
Diana Zapata from the women's squad as All-Academic Honorees for 2010. All four teams posted grade point averages above 3.00 during the fall quarter.
