LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team put together a solid showing in the season-opening meet at UC San Diego.
The day featured three different insitutions: the Broncos, UCSD and Claremont Mudd Scripps. As a team, CPP finished second with 119 points.
The Broncos' afternoon of events was highlighted by
Shane Cioni's effort in the shot put as he set a personal record with a distance of 50-10.25.
"Our entire group of throwers did a nice job today and set personal bests," CPP head coach Troy Johnson said. "Our team is making progress and it was good to see some success on the technical side."
Cioni's Saturday shot mark topped out his best from 2011, which was 48-0.5 at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. Also on Saturday in La Jolla, Cioni recorded team-best distances in the discus (148-11) and hammer throw (158-06). In another field event, CPP's
Connor Birtwhistle turned in a solid debut in the javelin with a mark of 172-05 to win that event.
The Broncos took first place in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. K.J. Comrie,
Jacob Deavers,
Tanner Terry and
Brian Crane combined for a 3:21.07 mark in the 4x400 relay while
Matt Boudreau,
James Weiner,
Sam Morales and
Orlando Smith posted the first-place 4x100 relay time of 42.79.
CPP also put together a dominating performance in both the 200- and 400-meter runs, taking the first, second and third-place spots during each event. Terry recorded the top 200 mark of 22.35 while Deavers crossed the line in the 400 with a meet-best 49.54.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday in Claremont, Calif., when they compete at the Rossi Relays.
