IRVINE, Calif. – Connor Birtwhistle and
Shane Cioni put together a pair of tremendous performances Saturday, highlighting the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field action during day one of the Steve Scott Invitational.
The two-day event hosted by UC Irvine featured a variety of top competitors from all levels, including international stars.
Birtwhistle took first in the javelin Saturday after posting a distance of 187-0, the fifth-best mark in program history. It stands as the second-best distance since 1995, trailing only
Lance Walkington's 222-0 recorded last season.
Cioni placed 10th overall in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 173-09, which matches the eighth-ranked distance in the Broncos' all-time record books. The winner of the event ended up being Mark Dry, a Scottish competitor who is ranked No. 1 in Great Britain for the event.
Sunday's action for the Broncos at UCI will begin at 12 p.m. with the shot put and at 12:05 p.m., the 4x100 relay team of
James Weiner,
Jacob Deavers,
Tanner Terry and
Matt Boudreau will compete.
This weekend's Steve Scott Invitational serves as the Broncos' final preparations before the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships get underway Thursday at Cal State L.A.
