PUEBLO, Colo. - With seven teammates cheering her on in Pueblo and many more watching from Pomona, Cal Poly Pomona's
Jillian Schmidt placed fourth in the high jump Saturday at the NCAA Division II National Championships to become a two-time All-American.
Having finished eighth in the heptathlon Friday with an epic comeback, Schmidt had to come back Saturday and compete against the nation's best high jumpers after completing seven events earlier in the week.
"I'm honestly so happy right now," Schmidt said after receiving her All-American trophy Saturday night. "I didn't know if my legs were going to work today after going through the heptathlon. I'm just thrilled to finish my senior year like this."
Schmidt rose to the occasion in the high jump, recording a mark of 5-8.75 to match the personal best she set on Thursday during day one of the D-II National Championships. Barbara Szabo of Western State captured the high jump national title with a height of 6-1.5.
Schmidt is the Broncos' first single-season two-time All-American since 1999 when Tabreshia Lawrence accomplished the feat in the 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash. Schmidt is one of four CPP student-athletes to receive All-American recognition in the high jump event and the first since 1989.
At the conclusion of the three-day national meet in Colorado, Saint Augustine's was crowned as the national champion in men's track and field while Academy of Art captured the title on the women's side. With Schmidt totaling six team points for the Broncos, CPP finished 40th overall out of 60 teams.
