Box Score | CHICO, Calif. – On Sunday afternoon in Chico, Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer needed a goal and a savvy veteran delivered.
Having gone scoreless through their last 229 minutes of action, the Broncos got a big overtime score from
Alison Sauve to topple Chico State 1-0.
The winning play demonstrated Suave's determination as it took three chances to finally knock the ball across the line. She initially attempted an 18-yard shot that deflected off of a Wildcats' defender. Sauve then put a header on frame and the Chico goalkeeper saved it off the post.
Never giving up on the play, Suave capitalized on her third try of the sequence and sent the Broncos back to Southern California with a key victory. For Sauve, a junior midfielder from Simi Valley, this marks career goal No. 7 and the second of the game-winning variety.
The result snaps a two-match losing streak for CPP, a squad now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Broncos are now only two points out of the South Division's first place, which is occupied by UC San Diego at 2-0-2.
CPP returns to action Friday with a home match at 7 p.m. The Broncos will host Sonoma State (3-0-1), a nationally-ranked squad that is in first place for the CCAA North Division.
While the Broncos ended their own scoreless streak in dramatic fashion, they also continue to build an impressive streak on their defensive effort when on the road in Chico. When at home in University Soccer Stadium, the Wildcats haven't scored against the Broncos since 2006 - a stretch that includes four matches.
CPP sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Abbott got the start Sunday and played well, collecting three saves en route to earning her first career shutout. The rest of the Broncos' squad contributed to the defensive effort, holding the Wildcats to zero shots on goal in the first half and outshooting Chico overall 13-6.
