CPP Sweeps Pioneers on Dig for a Cure Night

POMONA, Calif. - With Christen Williams leading the offense Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team swept Cal State East Bay in the annual "Dig for a Cure" match at Kellogg Gym.

It marked the second sweep of the 2014 season for CPP. At Kellogg Gym this year, the Broncos are 4-1 with a four-match winning streak. With the result, CPP is now 7-6 overall and 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). East Bay falls to 5-10 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Williams posted a 14-kill performance Friday while tallying a .455 attack percentage. Alexa Hasen put together a balanced effort as well with nine kills and four blocks. Nicoletta Stork added 21 assists and three service aces.

"I'm proud of the team because everyone contributed tonight," Broncos' head coach Rosie Wegrich said. "We worked very hard to move deeper in the court to improve our passing, something that hurt us in the previous match."

The Broncos secured wins in sets one and two with relative ease. The Pioneers took control of the third frame with a 21-17 lead. Williams posted a kill off an Alina Smith assist to snap the East Bay run. CPP then rattled off another three-straight points to even the score at 21-21. The set-tying point came from a Madison May kill after a Zoe Herrera assist.

After the two teams traded points and a Pioneers' service error provided CPP with a match point at 25-24, Hasen knocked the final kill into an open spot in the back row.

The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State Monterey Bay.
