POMONA, Calif. – On Wednesday, the first NCAA Division II regional rankings placed the Broncos at No. 1 in the West Region. As the record-setting season rages on and the Broncos have playoffs on the horizon, there are still a few more conference matchups to play. This week, CPP - ranked eighth nationally - will travel to Humboldt State as they take on the Jacks Friday at 3 p.m.
The HSU Jacks have registered an 8-5-1 tally on the season and own an even 4-4 in conference.
HSU will be hosting the Broncos after a four-game skid, the last of which was a 3-1 loss to Cal State LA. The last time the two met was in 2013. CPP hosted the Jacks and dealt them a 4-1 loss. In the all-time series, the Broncos lead the Jacks 7-3. After the matchup in HSU, the Broncos will head south from there as they will play visitor to the Seawolves of Sonoma State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Sonoma currently holds a 7-7-1 overall record, which comprises a 2-5-1 mark in the CCAA. With Sunday's 3-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay, the Broncos improved to a 14-0-1 overall record, while amassing an impeccable 8-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Wih the result, CPP clinched a spot in the upcoming six-team conference tournament.
The victory over the CSUMB Otters provided more scoring opportunities for the CPP goal leaders. CPP newcomer Armando Ochoa scored his fourth goal of the season just 45 seconds into the game. Alexander Turkson followed 18 minutes later with his sixth of the season. Lastly, the Broncos' goal leader, Christian Gonzalez Diaz, scored his eighth goal of the season just 44 seconds after Turkson's.CPP continues its presence on the NCAA Division II statistics leaderboards as they lead all of Division II in save percentage (0.918), won-lost-tied percentage (0.967), shutout percentage (0.67), and team goals against average (0.28). The Broncos also register on the NCAA Division II statistics leaderboards for four individual records.
Looking further ahead, the Broncos will host the No. 17 Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles on Oct. 30. This will be the final home game in CCAA regular season play. The game will also be Senior Day as CPP celebrates the achievements of the program's seven seniors. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
Playoff PictureIn looking at the postseason picture, the Broncos and the other five qualifying CCAA teams will advance to the conference tournament. The top two squads will earn a first-round bye, while the other four teams play at campus sites on Sunday, Nov. 2. The CCAA semifinal and final rounds will be played in Turlock, Calif., on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9.
The NCAA.com selection show will air on Nov. 10 and that'll include an announcement of the six D-II West Region teams in the NCAA Tournament field. The first NCAA regional poll appears below:
