Broncos Take Five-Game Win Streak to UCSD

POMONA, Calif. - Carrying a five-game win streak, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will play its final game of the 2014 calendar year on Sunday with a 2 p.m. tipoff at UC San Diego.

At 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, the Broncos have joined Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-0) and Humboldt State (3-0) as the only undefeated teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

CPP is also receiving votes just outside the top 25 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) national poll. In the latest Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll, the Broncos are featured at No. 4 in the West Region.

On the national stat leaderboard, CPP is ranked third in field-goal percentage (49.1) and 15th in assist to turnover ratio (1.23). Overall at the NCAA Division II level, the Broncos' offense is rated 32nd in terms of scoring average (78.3).

Senior Jada Blackwell, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, is off to a strong start in the 2014-15 campaign. She scored 29 points in her last game, an 82-71 home win over UCSD. Blackwell has posted two double-double performances so far and her scoring average of 22.3 ranks eighth nationally and No. 1 in the CCAA. She also owns the fourth-best three-point percentage among conference players.

Sunday's opponent - the Tritons of UCSD - holds an overall mark of 3-5 while going 1-2 in CCAA action. UCSD is aiming to snap a two-game losing streak.

Recruiting Power
Earlier this week, head coach Danelle Bishop announced the signing of Jordyn Shane, a 5-foot-7 guard from Victor Valley High School. In the 2013-14 season as a junior, Shane played in 20 games, where she averaged 16.5 points and 6.4 assists per game.

Shane marks the second signing for the Broncos so far in this recruiting class. In mid-November, Bishop announced the addition of Monay Mariscal, a 6-foot power forward from Dobson High School in Phoenix.

30-Year Reunion
On Saturday, Jan. 3, Cal Poly Pomona Intercollegiate Athletics and the women's basketball program will honor the university's 1985 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball national title in a 30-year reunion of the team. At halftime of the Jan. 3 women's basketball game, the 1985 Bronco alumni will be honored in a ceremony at center court.
