Ponce Tosses Complete Game as CPP Takes Series Lead

POMONA, Calif. – The 12th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split a Friday doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus at Scolinos Field as the Broncos got a complete-game effort from Cody Ponce to retake a 2-1 series lead over the Warriors.

Ponce totaled seven innings in the second game of the twinbill, allowing five hits, one run and zero walks in the Broncos' 6-1 victory. He also struck out seven. With the win, CPP improves to 28-11 overall and 21-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Still in fourth place, the Broncos hold a four-win lead over fifth-place Cal State East Bay (17-14).

For Stanislaus, Saturday's victory in game one snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Warriors. The visitors scored two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to ultimately capture a 4-3 win. CSUS stands at 12-27 overall and 6-24 in CCAA action.

The two teams will conclude their series on Saturday with a single nine-inning game starting at 11 a.m. The Broncos' Senior Day ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Scolinos Field.

Seniors Bo Walter and David Armendariz continue to bolster the CPP offense this weekend as Walter has collected six hits in the three games while Armendariz owns six RBI during that span.

Game 1 Box Score | Warriors 4, Broncos 3

CPP had the first game in its grasp until the later innings, when the Warriors struck for four runs and finished with the comeback win. The Broncos received a stellar start from sophomore lefthander Max Bethell, who went 7.1 innings and allowed just seven hits and one run.

After CCAA RBI leader Armendariz provided a pair of RBI early in the game - one on a sac fly in the third and the other with a single in the fifth - CPP took a 2-0 lead into the eighth inning. Stanislaus tied the game with two runs in that frame before Joseph Eusebio ended the rally with a double play, catching a fly ball in right and then throwing a runner out at home.

The Warriors' offense kept rolling in the ninth though and reliever David Snapp earned the win as the visiting squad held on for the 4-3 result, despite the Broncos getting a potential tying run in scoring position in their final at-bat.

Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 6, Warriors 1

CPP got on the board before the Warriors could record the first out in the bottom of the first. After Trevor Magno opened with a leadoff walk, Armendariz followed with an RBI double. Stanislaus managed to tie the score in its next at-bat but after that, Ponce settled in and only needed to face 25 batters in the seven-inning complete game.

The big Broncos' rally came in the third when the host squad rallied for four scores. CPP tallied six hits in that inning, including an Armendariz leadoff double and RBI singles from Eusebio, Chris Carlson and Matt Muñoz.
