Box Score | AZUSA, Calif. – The 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team finished its regular season Tuesday with a 10-6 victory at Azusa Pacific in non-conference play.
The Broncos connected for five homeruns in the game and 12 hits in total. Senior outfielders
David Armendariz and
Chris Carlson collected two homers each while fellow fourth-year
Bo Walter knocked his first career blast as a Bronco.
CPP will now take a 31-13 mark into next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship tournament. Unless UC San Diego is swept this weekend by Cal State San Bernardino to end the regular season, the Broncos will be the No. 4 seed and play their first-round game at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. CPP's opponent in that game - the No. 1 seed - has yet to be determined.
Through the team's CCAA regular season schedule that concluded Sunday in Chico, the Broncos went 23-12 for a winning percentage of .657. That mark is the sixth-best in school history and the highest win percentage in league play since 1985.
Tuesday's non-conference game at APU gave the Broncos an opportunity to distribute innings to a wider range of pitchers. Five CPP pitchers saw action and freshman
Michael Koval earned his first career victory with a stellar relief outing of 3.1 innings of one-run ball.
The Broncos' offense got going quickly Tuesday with
Matt Muñoz lining a leadoff single up the middle and then Armendariz launching a homer to left-center in the next at-bat. Later in the inning, Carlson pulled a homerun over the rightfield fence to put CPP ahead 3-0.
APU chipped away at the margin and ended up taking a 4-3 lead into the middle innings. Carlson tied up the score 4-4 with another solo shot but the Cougars managed to retake a 6-4 advantage with two scores in the bottom of the fifth.
CPP finished strong though with six unanswered runs through the final three frames. Armendariz and Walter connected for back-to-back homeruns in the top of the seventh, giving the Broncos a 7-6 edge.
RJ Shanks and
Andy Amaro delivered clutch outs in relief to follow Koval and then
J.J. Franklin pitched a scoreless ninth with a 10-6 margin after CPP tallied three more runs in its final turn at the plate.
