Broncos Fall 5-3 in Opening Game of West Regional

Box Score | LA JOLLA, Calif. – Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead Thursday against Cal Baptist, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team went quietly on offense the rest of the way and suffered a 5-3 loss in the opening round of the West Regional.

With a double-elimination format for the six-team regional, the Broncos will return to action Friday for a 3 p.m. game at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. CPP is set to take on the winner of the UC San Diego and Sonoma State matchup that'll be held Thursday night.

The Broncos received another strong start from junior righthander Steven Farnworth on Thursday but the CPP attack couldn't sustain its early momentum against the Lancers' Trevor Oaks, who was announced as West Region Pitcher of the Year earlier in the day. Oaks finished with a complete-game four-hitter, allowing three runs and striking out five. He retired the final 16 hitters he faced.

In the top of the first inning, the Broncos put together a one-out rally with three-consecutive hits. David Armendariz and Joseph Eusebio placed singles through the right side of the infield before Bo Walter knocked a double down the line. Chris Carlson capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly, putting CPP ahead 3-0.

The Lancers reversed the momentum quickly though, getting a two-run homer in the the bottom of the first when designated hitter Nathan Antoun launched the ball over the rightfield fence.

Farnworth kept the 3-2 lead intact until the fifth inning. During that frame, Andrew Montoya drove in the game-tying run with a two-out double. Farnworth finished his outing with 6.2 innings, with eight hits allowed and four earned runs to his name. CBU collected the go-ahead score with a sac fly in the seventh inning and added an insurance run in the eighth.

Montoya put together a stellar day at the plate for the Lancers, going 3-for-4 while also adding a walk.

The Broncos will match up against a familiar opponent on Friday with both UCSD and Sonoma being conference rivals. In 2014, CPP has gone 2-2 against the Tritons and 1-0 versus the Seawolves. First pitch for Friday's game will be 3 p.m.
