POMONA, Calif. - As the school year's Fall Quarter starts up again for some 22,000 students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the season for women's soccer is well underway.
The Broncos begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Friday at 4:30 p.m. as they host the 12th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. It'll be "Pack the Stands" night at Kellogg Field with plenty of promotions planned for CPP students wearing gold and sitting in the student section.
Entering the conference opener, CPP holds a 5-1 record, losing only to Dixie State in the first week of play. The Broncos have outscored opponents at Kellogg Field 14-1 and hold a 5-0 record at home.
No. 12 CSUSB holds a 7-0 record heading into the match and has outscored all opponents by a margin of 15-2. The all-time series record shows that the Broncos hold a 25-14-7 edge over the Coyotes.
The Broncos didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard last Saturday.
Arika Ontiveros worked to get the ball in open space along the left side and fired an attempt toward the target. It curled right of the far post but
Daisy Duran timed a run perfectly and lined an easy close-range shot into the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Broncos finished with a 20-3 shot advantage over the Red Storm and one of the final chances put CPP ahead 2-0. Duran sent a long cross into the box and
Melissa Martinez tapped a header that rolled past the goalie and across the line. So far in 2014, Martinez is tied for third on the CCAA leaderboard for points with 11.
To end the week, the Broncos take to the road and head to UC San Diego to challenge the Tritons Sunday at 2 p.m. The Tritons currently hold a 3-2-1 overall record and an all-time tally of 32-9-5 over CPP.
