POMONA, Calif. – With a No. 2
ranking in the West and a No. 17
ranking nationally, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team aims to finish strong with four regular season games remaining.
The first two of those four contests will be on the road this week. On Friday, the Broncos challenge Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside at 3 p .m. Then on Sunday, CPP plays a road match at San Francisco State at 2 p.m.
The Broncos are 8-1-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), totaling 17 points and ranking third in the league standings. Friday's opponent – CSUMB – is in eighth place at 4-5 in conference play. So far in 2015, SFSU – Sunday's opponent – has maintained a league record of 1-5-3.
This week, junior midfielder
Mathew Perez became the third Bronco to earn CCAA Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors. Last week, he helped CPP pick up wins over Cal State San Bernardino and Chico State as he tallied one goal and two assists. Earlier this year,
Sergi Monso and
Fernando Pablo Quevedo received the same recognition.
The Broncos' defense continues to excel in 2015. During conference games, CPP owns the second-lowest goals against average in the league at a mark of 0.82. The leader is Cal State L.A. at 0.43.
Serving as the HostCal Poly Pomona will serve as the hosts of the CCAA Soccer Championships coming up in early November. The conference postseason for women's soccer and men's soccer includes the top six teams, with first-round matches between the numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 seeds to be played at campus sites on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The winners of the first-round matches will face the top two seeds at Kellogg Field at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Nov. 6 at 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Championship contests will be played on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Beyond the CCAA ChampionshipsOnce the conference postseason wraps up, the NCAA will unveil its tournament field on Monday, Nov. 9. The top six teams from the West Region will advance and the first rankings were announced this Wednesday on NCAA.com.
