Broncos Hit the Road, Challenge Pioneers

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team heads north to challenge the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. start at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward. This is to be the only meeting of the two squads during the regular season.

The Broncos currently hold a 4-1-3 overall record on the season and have secured a 1-1-2 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUEB has thus far recorded a 1-5 mark in conference play en route to a 2-8 win-loss tally on the season.

In last season's lone meeting between the two teams, the Broncos topped the NorCal rivals 3-1. The victory for the Green and Gold was part of their record-setting 14-straight wins. In that matchup, Luis Najera Jr. scored first for the Broncos, then an East Bay goal, then Armando Ochoa provided CPP with both of the final two goals.

All-time, the record between the two teams leans in the Broncos' favor as they have won eight of the 14 meetings. The Pioneers have won two of the others, and the two have drawn ties on four separate occasions.

CSUEB has had three games get sent to overtime this season, and all of them ended up being won by the opposition. The Broncos have had three overtime matches thus far in 2015, and all three of the scored remained tied and account for CPP's three ties.

After their stop in Hayward, the Broncos will head east at make their way to Turlock where they will challenge the Stanislaus State Warriors. That game will be set to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at Warrior Stadium.

The Broncos and Warrior met twice last season. During the CCAA regular season, the Green and Gold bested Stan State 2-1 as part of CPP's 14-win streak. The final game of the season for the Broncos was between them and the Warriors as well in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The two teams battled for 110 minutes of play time and each team scored only once. After that, a round of penalty kicks ensued and the Broncos defeated the home town Warriors 3-0. The win gave the Broncos their first even CCAA Championship Title.

All-time the record between both squads is 10-6-2 in CPP's favor. Prior to hosting the Broncos, the Warriors (10-1, 5-1 CCAA) will host Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
