POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team begins its season Friday as the Broncos compete in a two-day tournament hosted by Azusa Pacific.
The Broncos will challenge Notre Dame de Namur on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Then on Saturday, CPP takes on host APU at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Broncos will play their home opener against Winona State.
This week's two opponents play out of the PacWest Conference. The Cougars of APU were picked to finish second in the league while NDNU held the No. 13 spot in the PacWest preseason poll.
After featuring five seniors on last year's roster, the 2015-16 CPP squad includes five first-year players. The senior class consists of
Jordan Faison,
Barry Bell and
Francois Tchoyi. In late September, Faison earned Sporting News Preseason All-American recognition.
The Broncos put together a 24-7 record last year, including a conference tournament title. CPP's season ended with loss to APU in the NCAA Division II Tournament's second round stage. This Saturday's 7:30 p.m. game will take place on the same court at the Felix Event Center, giving the Broncos a chance to avenge last year's defeat.
Last week, CPP was picked to finish second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) preseason poll. The Broncos will begin CCAA play on Wednesday, Dec. 2 with a home game against Cal State L.A.
Head coach
Greg Kamansky enters his 16th year as the Broncos' head coach and he holds a career record of 316-124. Joining Kamansky on the sidelines are associate head coach
Damion Hill and assistant coach
