Cal Poly Pomona Finishes as National Runner-Up

PENSACOLA, Fla. – After capturing the program's first four NCAA Tournament victories this season, the historic run of Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer came to an end in the NCAA D-II National Championship game with a 4-0 loss to the No. 1-ranked Pfeiffer. The Falcons wrapped up an undefeated season.

"I'm very proud of my players, the staff, the team", said head coach Yossi Raz. "We gave everything had. We had a very long and successful season, but now its time to rest a little bit... rest our mind, rest our bodies, and get back to the drawing board and hopefully make another run at it very soon."

CPP finishes the season with an overall tally of 17-3-3. The Broncos did their fans proud as they tied the program's 17-win single season record, won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament, won the West Region, topped a pair of Top-10 opponents, including a 1-0 victory in the Final Four, and made it to the NCAA National Championship match for the first time in program history.

Fans are encouraged to greet the Broncos' men's soccer team when they return to Lot B on Sunday around 3 p.m. Stay tuned to twitter.com/cppbroncos for updates on the team's arrival.

The title game's first goal was scored by the nation's leading goal scorer Nathan Regis of Pfeiffer. The Southeast Region's Player of the Year, Regis' goal was No. 31 of the season. His score came early in the game as an assist from Jorge Buzzo found Regis and he sent a shot into the back of the CPP net. The goal came with just over two and a half minutes played in the contest.

Carrying their momentum from that first goal into the next few minutes, the Falcons would find the net again. This time the score was at the foot of Jaime Siaj. The goal came just one minute and 27 second after their first goal.

The remaining 40 minutes in the first half showed two stellar defenses battling it out. A total of six shots came from the Broncos feet in the first half. With 11 total coming from the Falcons. Heading into halftime, the Green and Gold trailed Pfeiffer 2-0.

In the second half of the Championship contest, the Falcons found themselves on the advantageous side of a foul inside the CPP penalty box. The penalty was awarded to Regis and he was able to send a shot to the left side of the goal past Fernando Pablo Quevedo. The goal came in the game's 61st minute.

As they proved adept at doing, the Falcons carried their momentum into the next few minutes and in minute 63 of the game were able to send another shot in. Martim Galvao earned the goal and his ninth of the season.

With a stellar job in the tournament, the Broncos earned three players on the NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team. Making his way on the team was Alexander Turkson, who secured CPP's game-winning goal in the Final Four matchup against Rockhurst.

Also being named to the squad were Eshel Chardon, a midfielder from Rosh Haain, Israel, and Pablo Quevedo, the Green and Gold's senior keeper from Santander, Spain. Chardon produced a solid all-around performance in the tournament, providing Turkson and Justyn Peeples with the corner kick that led to the winning goal in the Final Four matchup. Pablo Quevedo was one of the Green and Gold's defensive standouts in the first game, boasting two world class saves in the goal and keeping the nationally-ranked Rockhurst squad scoreless.
