Broncos to Challenge Seawolves, Gators


POMONA, Calif. – Returning to Northern California once again, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will challenge Sonoma State on Friday and then SF State on Saturday. Both games will start at 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos have secured a 16-5 mark on the season, complete with a 12-4 tally in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). In away games, CPP owns a 5-2 mark. With six regular season games remaining, the second-place Broncos are just two wins behind first-place Chico State (14-3).

Last time the Broncos and Sonoma State met was at Kellogg Gym on Jan. 10, when CPP secured a 70-48 victory over the visitors. In that matchup, three Broncos scored in double digits and CPP outrebounded Sonoma 33-22.

Allowing an average of 56.4 points per game, the Broncos lead the nation as the best defense in Division II.

Terrence Drisdom leads the conference in points per game, steals per game and steals. He puts in an average of 16 points, 2.4 steals per game, and has recorded 51 steals this season. Right behind Drisdom in steals is Barry Bell at the No. 2 spot with an average of two steals per game and 42 steals on the season.

Thus far in 2014-15, SSU has an 11-9 mark in overall play and an even 8-8 in CCAA games. The Broncos lead the all-time series against the Seawolves, having won 30-of-45 games.

Looking toward Saturday's matchup, the Broncos will face off against the Gators. Through 2014-15, SFSU has gone 6-10 in conference contests and an overall 8-12 on the season. Last time the squads met, CPP held the Gators to the second lowest point total in the Kamansky era as they doubled the opposition's score with a 64-32 total.

The all-time series includes the Broncos winning 38 times to the Gators' 14. SFSU will first play against UC San Diego on Friday night before hosting CPP on Saturday.

The Cal Poly Pomona Homecoming will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21, and the day's events will feature a women's basketball game at 5:30 p.m. and a men's basketball game at 7:30. Postseason Picture
The top six CCAA teams will advance to the conference tournament to be held in Stockton from March 5 through March 7. The NCAA Division II Tournament bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, March 8, with the top West Region squads earning spots. The first NCAA D-II regional polls will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Canned Food Drive
During the week of Feb. 16 through Feb. 22, the Broncos are collecting canned goods as part of the CCAA drive to help local food banks. Fans are encouraged to donate canned food items at the basketball doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 20 and then the baseball and basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 21.
