CPP Dealt First Loss of 2015, Falls 2-1 at APU

AZUSA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos were dealt their first loss of the 2015 season on Friday, falling 2-1 to Azusa Pacific. The loss came in extra innings with a walkoff single to centerfield.

With the loss, CPP now holds a 4-1 record on the season. Azusa Pacific improves to a 2015 tally of five wins and one loss. Zach Williams was given the loss in the game with APU winning on the walkoff single coming in the 10th.

Heading into the game, it was predicted to be a pitcher's duel. How true that was, junior righty Cody Ponce took the bump for the Broncos and was paired against the Cougars' ace Josh Staumont.

Ponce threw 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball, tossing 66 pitches and allowing just two hits. With his fastball sitting around 95 mph, the Upland native struck out six of the 16 batters he faced.

The Broncos' lone run in the game came in the top of the sixth. With the count sitting at one ball and no strikes for Nick Cooksey, Staumont served one up that was just too good to let go and the Bronco captain let it fly. He sent a towering shot over the rightfield fence and put the visitors up 1-0.

As the game progressed, it would seem the home team couldn't catch a break. Their luck would change however in the bottom of the eighth as a bases-loaded no-out balk by the Broncos forced a run to cross the plate. CPP kept the Cougars scoreless through the remainder of the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Christian Kelley drew a walk and was forced out at second on a Caleb Romo fielder's choice. The Broncos were unable to capitalize past that however and the game entered the bottom of the ninth. Zach Williams came in to finish the game for CPP and struck out the side.

With the Broncos being shut down in the top of the tenth, it was APU's turn. The Cougars drew a walk, then a groundout that moved their runner to second. Another groundout put two outs on the board, when APU's Daniel Martin came to the plate. With an 0-1 count, he sent a single up the middle that allowed for the runner to score from second.

CPP will return to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. start at Scolinos Field. The game will mark the Broncos' home opener.
