Broncos Top APU 5-3 in 2015 Home Opener

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured a 5-3 win Saturday to conclude a two-game series against Azusa Pacific. After battling APU Friday in Azusa, CPP hosted the Cougars for the 2015 home opener at Scolinos Field on Saturday.

With Saturday's victory, CPP now holds a 5-1 record on the season while dropping APU to a 5-2 mark.

The Broncos were quick to get on the board as Michael Erb came up with a solid knock down the leftfield line to score both Matt Munoz and Michael Zidek. Munoz reached base safely after leading things off for CPP with a single in the first.

Starting for the Broncos Saturday was Ryan Olson, a sophomore transfer to CPP from the University of San Diego. The Upland native tossed 52 pitches and faced 13 batters in the appearance. He provided three strikeouts and one walk for CPP. After three innings of duty, Olson was relieved by Chris Powell.

In the bottom of the fifth, Erb would again prove to be an offensive catalyst for the Broncos as he came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a line drive at the APU second baseman. It ended up as an error in the books, but Erb had a job to do and he capitalized on the Cougar pitch.

Powell provided three solid innings in relief for CPP, racking up four strikeouts and a walk through 12 batters faced. Keeping his pitchers to a safe pitch count, head coach Randy Betten allowed Powell to deliver 49 pitches and then called in Richard McWilliams to take the mound for the Broncos in the top of the seventh.

The Cougars earned their first run in the top of the seventh with a long sacrifice fly by Michael Staudinger. Blake James scored from third after tagging up on contact.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Austin Boyle was given the ball and finished things off for CPP in the inning. A pretty uneventful bottom of the eighth was in action for the Broncos as no excitement was to be had. Cal Poly Pomona save record holder and CCAA Pitcher of the Week last week J.J. Franklin was brought in to finish the game up for the Broncos.

In the top of the ninth, the Cougars showed some life and with a runner on Daniel Martin sent one just over the left field fence that put the visitors just two runs behind the Broncos.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday as they open CCAA play against the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. It will be a weekend split as CSUSB will host on Thursday and Friday and then head to Scolinos Field as CPP hosts on Saturday. Saturday's doubleheader will mark Homecoming day for the Broncos and CPP athletics will be busy with the baseball doubleheader and men's and women's basketball that night.
